Instructional Procedures

Introduce students to the idea of colonization and migration by having them access and read the following website: http://www.ready-aim-fireants.com.

Students will discuss the colonization of Hispaniola and the effect fireants had on the colony.

Each student will choose a colonizing country for their inquiry project.

Students will conduct research in the library and on the web regarding the colonizing country. Students will learn how to find and use primary sources such as journals and letters from the relevant time period.

Students will prepare and deliver a presentation to the class, demonstrating the results of their research. In their presentations, students will use a map to identify the location of the colonizing country and the countries colonized by that nation. Students will use a timeline to identify significant events during the period. Students will include a reference to primary sources, and the students will discuss the government, culture and history of the colonizing country, as well as the effects of colonialism on that country.
